Global Movement Launches New Web Site Raising Awareness on Radicalization of the Chávez Regime in Venezuela

October 1, 2009

President Hugo Chávez rose to power promising a moderate course in ending what he called the “corruption of the old guard” in Venezuela. Yet, over the past decade, Chávez has consistently demonstrated his disregard for democratic values and institutions, and he has effectively become the most powerful caudillo in Latin America.

What’s Next Venezuela? is a global movement dedicated to raising awareness of the rapidly increasing radicalization of the Chávez regime at this critical time for both Venezuela and the Western Hemisphere. We serve as a platform for public debate on Chávez’s “21st Century Socialism” agenda and its negative impact on Venezuela and beyond.

On a daily basis, news out of Venezuela confirms the increasingly worrisome tactics of the Chávez regime to curtail all civil liberties. Last week, the Associated Press reported that “President Hugo Chávez’s government is preparing to nationalize the nation’s largest coffee producers, claiming the companies have refused to comply with federal price controls.” This is the latest on a storm of attacks on private property in the country.

This week, Venezuelans have been inspired by the unyielding commitment of a group of students, who in the midst of a hunger strike are asking the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights to look into the persecution of those who openly disagree with Chávez’s policies.

Yet, as civil liberties continue to become eroded in Venezuela, Chávez maintains a facade unseemly to Venezuela’s reality. In his statement last week to the U.N. General Assembly, Chávez called on the people to build the future of the “free world,” despite his own government’s actions against all freedoms in Venezuela.

It is common practice for Chávez’s regime to improperly nationalize industries, illegally seize private property, systematically destroy the freedom of the press, constantly persecute and harass the opposition – all at a time when inflation and unemployment cripple the Venezuelan people. Is this the type of “free world” Chávez advocates?
